From how many contacts you have in your address book, how often you send instant messages, to all your search engine queries and clicks, instant messaging programs are just another way to relinquish Internet privacy.

To shed a little light on what the various instant message services mean to your privacy, we've copied some of the bullet points of their policy to help you understand the ambiguous verbiage:

GOOGLE: When you use Google Talk, we may record information about your usage, such as when you use Google Talk, the size of your contact list and the contacts you communicate with, and the frequency and size of data transfers. Information displayed or clicked on in the Google Talk interface (including UI elements, settings, and other information) is also recorded.

Content.

Interpretation: After you sign up for our instant messaging service, be prepared for us to monitor all of your Internet activity.

GOOGLE: On a regular basis, we delete activity information associated with your account.

Summary: Although "regular basis" is a subjective term, don't worry about us keeping any superfluous instant messages that send happy, or sad faces, we only maintain information that helps us develop a complete composite of who you are, your personality and the types of ads that you are most prone to click.

GOOGLE: We may combine the information you submit under your account with information from other Google services or third parties in order to provide you with a better experience and to improve the quality of our services.

Interpretation: We need your information to keep us in business.

GOOGLE: For certain services, we may give you the opportunity to opt out of combining such information.

As much as we try to monetize all of our services, we have not figured out how to exploit all of your online activity. So, until we do--enjoy our services and don't bother looking for an opt out option because we never programmed one.

GOOGLE: If Google becomes involved in a merger, acquisition, or any form of sale of some or all of its assets, we will provide notice before personal information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Interpretation: When we decide to sell our company or IM service, thanks to people like you, across the world, we'll make a minimum of $5 billion. But in the interim, we'll send you a cordial email notice -- that your information has transferred to another organization.

YAHOO!: We reserve the right to send you certain communications relating to the Yahoo! service, such as service announcements, administrative messages and the Yahoo! Newsletter, that are considered part of your Yahoo! account, without offering you the opportunity to opt out of receiving them.

Interpretation: As long as you're subscribed to use our service, expect our us to spam you on a regular basis.

Now out of all the YAHOO!, Google and MSN instant messaging programs, only one offers a clear cut opt out option. Below is MSN's detailed oriented

privacy policy.

_____________________________________________

MSN: When we display online advertisements to you, we will place a persistent cookie on your computer in order to recognize your computer each time we display an ad to you. Because we may serve advertisements on many different Web sites, we are able to compile information over time about where you, or others who are using your computer, saw and/or clicked on the advertisements we display. We use this information to make predictions about your characteristics, interests or preferences and to display targeted advertisements that we believe may be of interest to you. Further, we have built in technological and process safeguards designed to prevent the unauthorized correlation of this data. We also give you the ability to opt-out of personalized ads. The pavement is the same concrete that we purchased when we bought our home. Since, we've never hired a contractor to repave our driveway, can you tell us how to qualify a reliable concrete contractor?

In need of concrete advice - Raleigh, NC

__________________________________________________

Dear INOCA,

We did some poking around. We contacted the American Concrete Institute (ACI). According to the ACI, the concrete industry is notorious for complaints. Driveways are expensive contracting projects. Hiring the best concrete contractor calls for a modicum of due diligence:

Seek Referrals

For a list of viable companies, you can do one of two things: 1) Contact the ACI directly at 248-848-3700 for a referral or visit the site at concrete.org and locate the chapter closest to you.

Obtain a minimum of three contractor quotes.

Check out other driveways that the company has completed. Be sure to review recent concrete projects as well as driveways, dating back to more than a decade ago.

Request Documentation

Ask the contractor for a copy of their license, public liability and workers' compensation policies.

Happy Paving,

The Consumer Journal.com

Labels: concrete, driveway pavement,

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Filing Complaint Letters

Complaint Resources

Where do you go to file a security violation or consumer fraud? Where can you post a complaint and pray for action? Check out these complaint resources.

For a five-dollar fee, consumers can post complaints about illicit companies at the SqueakyWheel. The site exposes complaints by submitting the page to Google so that your complaint gains exposure on Internet searches and submits the company a notification of your complaint. Each time, someone reads the grievance; the company in question receives a notice that the email was read by someone else. <a href="http://www.thesqueakywheel.com/FAQS.html

www.thesqueakywheel.com/FAQS.html

<br class="webkit-block-placeholder">

United States Securities and Exchange Commission

In cases where consumers are victims of security fraud or a security violation, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission has online forms of the various types of misconduct to file a complaint.

http://www.sec.gov/complaint/selectconduct.shtml

Complaints.com

Complaints.com is an excellent site for making illicit businesses accountable for wronging consumers. Customers are allowed to post a complaint, and the option for the site to notify the business of their unsavory transaction.

The Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau resolves issues and works as a liaison for consumers. However, for a nominal, fee companies may "apply for accreditation." What makes BBB a little questionable is that while they make certain companies appear ethical, many of the illicit businesses register for accreditation with the soul purpose to mislead consumers.

Consumer tip: Check the Better Business Bureau for companies that are registered and have grievances. Any company with the BBB accreditation and more than three infractions is a sign of a company with a shady modus operandi.

For detrimental products that can cause a fire, damage or any type of product-related injury, American consumers can report complaints to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission:

(800) 638-2772 or CPSC hotline

www.cpsc.gov/talk.htm

Web site at <a href="http://www.cpsc.gov.

www.cpsc.gov.

<br class="webkit-block-placeholder">

Also, consumers are welcomed to submit their grievance to the Consumer Journal for action. They are an eyewear necessity. Just as the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the skin, UV rays are a detriment to the eyes, too. Even contact lenses wearers need UV protection. A host of eye diseases are attributable to overexposure: conjunctivitis, macular degeneration, cataracts and mini bumps on the whites of the eyes (pterygia).

Ophthalmologists advise that patients wear eye protection with the following features:

■ 100 percent UV protection

■ Sunglass lenses that shroud the forehead

■ Shades which cover the cheeks and the temple region

■ The colorblind should opt for gray hued shades (specifically for driving)

■ During sports or other physically demanding activities, shatter-proof eyewear with with dark-colored lenses or goggles offers the best protection.

Read other articles and resources about the eyes:

■ UV exposure safety
■ Glaucoma, the Quiet Vision Thief

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Recipe for Good and Safe Cooking

TAGS: cooking tips, safe cooking, food preparation, basic cooking safety,

Cooking in the kitchen does not call for a calamity in convection baking. Rather, it's a celebration or ritual in food preparation. The recipe for food cooking is all in the technique and tools. But, what many people don't know about cooking is that it’s a succession of synchronized tasks. In other words, it's all in the timing.

In order for all courses to come out simultaneously, refer to the preparation and cooking time demarcated on the recipe. When you prepare a three to five course meal, start with the dish that requires the most cooking and preparation time. Then, move on to the next course, which necessitates the most time, and so on. For example, if you're cooking spaghetti sauce, start with the sauce and boil the pasta, the last 10 minutes. Use the time that the water is boiling to cut foods, like fresh baked bread and mix other dishes together (in example: a salad).

Aside from synchronizing the cooking time of each course, invest in quality food preparation equipment:

Cooking utensils to invest in:

■	Cooking timers -- keep you on schedule. As an alternate use timer installed on your microwave over. (In example, most General Electric microwave ovens have cooking timers).

■	The good chopping knife -- simplifies dicing, slicing and minimizes accidental finger abrasions. (Calphalon produces a 7” Santoku knife that does not require much sharpening and offers precision cutting, guaranteed).

■	A high-end cutting board -- is easy to clean and accommodates both produce and meats. (Visit Sur La Table, which has an extensive selection of high end cutting boards).

■	Quality cookware -- free of carcinogenic bearing elements assures safe and healthy eating.

■	Instant-read meat thermometer -- ensures red and white meats are safe for consumption.

Prior to touching any food or placing it on a kitchen surface (counter, cutting board, plate), remember to wash your hands and sanitize each surface. By making these hygienic practices a part of your food preparation regimen, you can alleviate the chances of food poisoning and other airborne bacteria.

Between timing and quality cooking utensils, you're bound for a recipe in good cooking.

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Booking a Discount Hotel

Tags: discount hotels, travel deals,

As the cost of crude oil totters just under $120 a barrel, it’s pretty clear that airfare and gas won’t be getting cheap anytime soon. With the nation’s glut of hotel real estate, accommodations are a plenty. Which means, there are a few money savings tips to book discounted hotel stay.

Despite the cost to drive or fly, the Consumer Journal researched a strategy for securing and reserving affordable lodging accommodations. Use the following checklist to acquire your discounted hotel stay at a four or even five star hotel:

Peruse local hotel rates.

From the five-star hotel, to the Comfort Inn, visit hotel booking sites to cost compare the variation of rates. Although, Hotels.com and Priceline, Expedia.com offer a wide range of room reservations, be sure to visit websites, such as TripAdvisor.com. The site features a comprehensive database of hotel reviews, written by real travelers. Once, you’ve narrowed your choices; proceed with booking your reservation.

Calculate the deal.

Beware of a free night’s stay. Depending on the room rate, an additional night’s stay could end up costing you more. For example, let’s say you drive to St. Louis, and there’s a special promotion for a “third night free.” Be sure to calculate and compare the regular cost of the room for two and three night’s stay. Sometimes, these offers may be pricier than a regular booking. In cases, where you’re flying, evaluate the cost of the flight if you extend your flight or stay to one more day.

Make direct contact.

Depending on the hotel, making direct contact may offer the ultimate savings. Instead of using the 800-number, be sure to call the hotel you would like to book your reservation. Ask to confer with a hotel manager, who has the authority and motivation to fill all rooms.

Opt for the cheap-o hotel.

In cases where the luxury hotel is out of your budget, reserve a room at an affordable chain, where cancellations are accepted without any penalties. Then, two days prior to your stay, contact the upscale hotel to see if there are any deals within your means. If so, lock in the reservation and cancel your original hotel booking.

Consider time-shares.

Not all luxury hotels are looking to discount their room rates. As an affordable alternative, consider a timeshare. With a number of hotels doubling as getaway living accommodations or timeshares, depending on the city, luxury accommodations are in ample supply. For instance at SellMyTimeShareNow.com, condos and single family homes are available for weekly rates.

Take advantage of memberships.

When all else fails, the cheapest hotel stay is in your wallet. If you’re a member of Sam’s Club, AAA or any frequent miles program, be sure to take advantage of these program’s hotel discounts and travel incentives.

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Consumer Beware: No Refund Policy

Tags: consumer satisfaction, no policy refunds, no money-back guarantee

All too often, unsuspecting consumers review the terms of service and ignore one glaring policy: "no refunds." In the end, the decisive consumer is the one who gets burned by this unfriendly customer service guideline. While many merchants use this policy to avoid charge-backs, others abuse it by neglecting to deliver the products or services.

The problem is who would ever think that a company would process one's credit card, and then not provide the goods? They're called illicit businesses. As a result, consumers should exercise the right to avoid e-commerce sites, who have this policy. While most of us understand why clearance items, downloadable movies and music are non-negotiable, other products don't cut the grade. But for those tangible products, such as clothes, households, jewelry, et cetera, a company unwilling to extend a refund is an indication of an organization with unsavory consumer tendencies.

Moral of the consumer story: Always read the terms of service. If the company has a no-refund policy, re-evaluate whether your purchase is worth the potential headache or risk of not getting your money back. In the end, most no refund policies mean purchase at your own risk.

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Eco-friendly Wonders of Vinegar

TAGS: vinegar, eco friendly cleaning alternative, non-toxic cleaner

Whoever said that store bought household cleaning products are the end all to dirt and scum, never knew the power of vinegar. As your organization prepares to close 600 sites across the nation, you might consider looking within your product line. From coast-to-coast, the items patrons usually purchase with their coffee (bagels, cakes, cookies, etc) lack the continuity of quality of your primary offering: caffeinated beverages. These over-priced, high caloric and undercooked or stale pastries are most likely preventing Starbucks from its growth potential.

Many customers, like myself, hope that Starbucks would enhance their pastry selection. Out of pure optimistic naivete, every so often, I try your pastries, hoping that something has changed. As all of your baked goods look appealing behind the glass display, they usually taste stale, or are unpleasant to the palate. By the time most consumers make the realization, they are several blocks away from your store. For instance, on July 9th, although your toffee almond bar looked freshly baked, it was so doughy, I had serious concerns about salmonella. Fortunately, your attentive staff replaced the unsavory pastry with a chocolate chip cookie.

While the chocolate chip cookie was not stale or under-baked, the flavor of the cookie was so laden in butter and salt that I have to say, it was the worst chocolate chip cookie I have ever consumed in my entire life. As a long time customer, I think you should know that your additional product offerings are quite unsatisfying. The most enjoyable snack, your organization used to offer, is no longer on sale: the "dark chocolate Graham cracker." Starbucks might consider surveying your customers and discontinuing products that are ineffective.

Even the Internet service with AT & T is inept. Although, I am a subscriber of AT and T, each time I try to access the wi-fi service at one of your retail locations, the network either diverts to the T-mobile service, allows access for a few moments or does not work at all.

Maybe, the solution to the tasteless pastry issue is to strategically partner with local bakeries of each market. However, there are several ways to conserve on fuel. Aside from opting for public transportation, car pooling or hopping a bike there are four tactics to save on gas:

Add the Right Oil

Starting under the hood of the car, using the appropriate grade of motor oil makes for good fuel economy. For the best fuel efficiency, refer to the vehicles owner's manual and use the recommended grade of your car's model. Because it makes the engine work harder, motor oil, too thick in viscosity, tends to make the engine burn more fuel.

Have a Tune-up

Rather than use an additive touted to improve gas mileage, giving your vehicle a tune up is far more effective. For instance, an air filter replacement can boost mileage by ten percent. Moreover, a tuned engine with clean spark plugs and a wheel alignment present fuel efficiency.

Inflate the tires

While, improperly inflated tires expend more gas, over-inflated tires hinder the performance of the vehicle. Be sure to inflate tires to the pressure detailed in the owner's manual.

Crank the AC

While most people are shutting off the air conditioner to economize on fuel, this is ideal for local neighborhood runs. Since an open window at high speeds is harder on the engine, on the highway running the air conditioner is more fuel efficient.

Related Articles:

	•	Search Local and National Gas Prices

	•	The Five Repairs Every Car Owner Should Know

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Travel Report: On-time Flight Arrivals

TAGS: on-time flight arrivals, flight delays, flight cancellations, airlines, on-time airline

As Southwest soars new heights in passenger satisfaction, US Airways lands in first place for on-time arrivals this year (January -May 2008). If one compares the 11-minute flight delay time out of 500,000+ flights to US Airways 6-minute flight delay--out of 192,000+ flights, it's pretty obvious which airline has the best on-time landing percentage than the other behemoth airlines.

So, while American, US Airways and American Airlines innovate more ways to charge their passengers for inconvenience, they might consider focusing on the basics: reliable flights schedules and good old-fashioned friendly customer service.

Related Articles:

	•	10-Reasons to Fly Southwest

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Consumer Credit QA

TAGS: personal finance advice, credit score, FICO, boost credit, repair credit

Dear Consumer Journal,

In six months, I plan to start looking for a new home; can you provide some tips on raising my FICO score?

Sally - Lexington, KY

________________________________________

Dear Sally,

If you want to boost your FICO credit score, there are five steps to improve your credit worthiness:

1.	Order a copy of your credit report. Then, identify any errors and send the appropriate documentation to amend the mistakes to each credit reporting agencies: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

2.	Make credit card payments before the due date. Keep a low ratio of outstanding debt compared to your available line of credit.

4.	Maintain all credit-card accounts. Closing old accounts reduces the overall total of available credit, inherently lowering the credit score.

5.	Keep a blend of credit products. For the FICO 2008, a new scoring model assesses credit based on a mixture of credit-cards and installment loans. To ensure a better score, maintain a variation of credit accounts.

CJ

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Fax Machine Product Recall

TAGS: fax machine recall, Hewlett-Packard, HP 10-10, HP 1010 XI, fax machine rebate

Hewlett-Packard issued a recall on their facsimile models sold between 2002 and 2004:

■ HP 10-10

■ HP 1010 XI

More than 360,000 models have been recalled. From London to New Orleans, vacation crime is a reality. Review these popular vacation destinations, and their unique crime, scam attractions:

Huggable Pickpockets

Pickpockets are so friendly in Barcelona that they greet tourists with a tight hug and make off with a wallet and all. These hugging techniques are the latest in amicable picket pocketing. Although most attractions in Barcelona are safe, tourists should be leery of strangers who try to reach out hug someone.

Bet On Bourbon Street

Regardless if a tourist is looking to place a bet or not, a prevalent scam in New Orleans' French Quarter involves a man approaching unsuspecting victims with the following greeting: "Bet you $5 that I can tell you where you got your shoes!"

With or without the person's acceptance of the bet, the confrontation ends in a stick up and the assailant saying, "On your feet on Bourbon Street." Officials advise people to ignore the scam by continuing to walk without responding to the scam artist.

GPS Grab and Go

As soon as your GPS gives you the last direction to popular attractions in Philadelphia, be sure to hide all your technology gadgets. At destinations like Liberty Bell, thieves abscond GPS devices, iPods, radar detectors and other items. From the suctioned outline of where the GPS sits on the windshield, to a stray cord dangling out of a storage compartment, Philadelphian authorities report that predators look for any telltale signs of the GPS. As a result, travelers are advised to wipe down the windshield and hide any other traces of the GPS.

Long Haul Cab Rides

Upon arrival in Las Vegas and prior to the hotel check in, the commute from the airport to the strip is a 20-minute ride. Beware of cabs, where the driver takes a scenic route or a long haul to jack up the cab fare. According to Las Vegas police officials, "long hauls" are an emerging trend in tourist scams.

Open Door Atrocities

In the province of Quebec, leaving a door unlocked is a finable offense (up to $30). In Old Montreal, automobiles with unlocked doors are making it easy for thieves to steal iPods, laptops and GPS devices. Tourists are reminded to lock and store gadgets and extra belongings in the trunk.

Refueling Inspires Robbery

Robbers are quite rapid in Washington D.C. At gas stations, when tourists fuel up, pay for gas or make a pit stop, thieves snatch and grab any unattended valuables from unlocked car doors. In the nation's capital, these incidents have been on the rise since 2006.

The Cafe Diversion

At outdoor cafes, coffeehouses and other crowded public places in Chicago, predators prey on business travelers and other people who use a laptop. In close proximity to the victim, two thieves will set up operations and wait for the perfect time to make off with a wallet, purse or bag.

Unworthy Disney and Universal Discounts

While Disney World and Universal Studios offer multi-day passes, they prohibit guests from reselling these passes. Companies not affiliated with the popular tourist attractions scalp tickets from visitors who no longer need the tickets, and resell the same tickets for a reduced rate. Unfortunately, attendees caught with these resold discount tickets run the risk of being turned away from the park.

Tarnished Jewelry Buys

Jewelry buyers beware of the merchandise in Cancun, and Playa Del Carmen. On the beach, street peddlers market cheap metal as real silver. But by the time most people realize the jewelry is faux, it has turned yellow, tarnished and they are back in the United States, Europe or Canada.

Un-Fare Rides

In London, unlicensed minicabs park outside of restaurants, theaters and taverns. Recent data shows that the drivers have been attacking women. Dating back to 2006, more than 10 victims were assaulted each month. Unlike, the old-fashioned black cabs which are licensed by the city, these "minicabs' are usually authorized to shuttle reserved passengers only.

Vacation Crime Victim Avoidance Tips: Regardless of where you travel, keep your guard up. Aside from sightseeing be attentive of your surroundings. Avoid desolate areas. On foot or by car always, conceal cameras. iPods, GPS and other valuables. Always carry a cell phone for emergency phone calls.

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

5-Thrifty, Green Gardening Tips

TAGS: eco-gardening, green garden tips, eco-friendly garden, gardening green

Frugal and eco-friendly gardening sows the seeds of much satisfaction. Here are five strategies and tactics for cultivating a green garden on a budget.

1) Reduce Greenhouse-Gas Emissions

By doing the laborious work of mowing; raking and maintaining your lawn, you can reduce the green house emissions of a lawn service. Since, these companies have to fuel up and power in, you can lower your carbon footprint, by using a non-electrical mower or the new solar powered one, featured at here at TechScout [Source].

2) Fertilize the Natural Way.

With the supplementation of compost, the lawn and vegetable garden require less soil fertilizer. Instead of discarding those yard clippings, plant waste doubles as compost. Allow leaf clippings to break down on the grass and vegetable garden.

3) Conservative Watering

Say no to mindless watering by investing in a rain gauge. It will alleviate excessive watering, conserve and keep your water bill within reason. So that roots can grow deep enough to withstand minimal watering, choose one day a week to give the lawn an intensive hydration. Anytime, it rains more than an inch a week, you can skip watering the lawn that week.

4) Swap and Share

Experienced gardeners can share floras and botanical by divvying up any surplus plants. Novice botanists may swap or barter other things like food, favors in exchange for flowers and greenery. While some people think all non-stick pans are safe, others perceive the cookware as lethal. Based on a report released by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI), American consumers need not worry about the health risks associated with using non-stick cookware.

Considering the fact that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that DuPont failed to reveal various details pertaining to the safety tests of their plastic products some 20 years ago, for obvious reasons, it seems like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), SPI and EPA organizations would offer unbiased information.

PFOA, Non-stick Cookware and Teflon

In fact, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the US DuPont Corporation never disclosed the safety hazards associated with the chemical called PFOA. Perflurooctanoic Acid (PFOA), also known as or C-8 is used to make non-stick cooking surfaces, as well as Teflon.

Non-stick cookware poses many potential health risks. Although, PFOA is only accessible during the production of the final product, research shows that the chemical made to produce Teflon and other non-stick cooking products has been found in more than 90 percent of all Americans, four years subsequent to exposure. Not to mention, various studies, show PFOA promotes many cancers (breast liver, pancreas, mammary glands, and testicles). Moreover, other medical studies indicate that C-8 increases the risk of a weakened immune system, weight loss, miscarriages, and thyroid problems.

So is non-stick cookware safe?

On a positive note, non-stick cookware can be safe as long as its temperature does not exceed 500 degrees or more. By cooking at temperatures under 375 degrees, the cookware is less likely to emit the chemical, PFOA.

As an alternative, prepare cookware with foods made of stainless steel or iron. While these kitchen cook appliances are not stick proof, low fat butters, olive and canola can be healthy substitute. But then again, too much oil might even be worse than preparing food in non-stick cookware.

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Vacation Ideas Made Simple

TAGS: vacation ideas, travel planning, airfare, hotels, flights,

Tired of vacationing at the same old, same old travel destinations? Looking for a place to frolic in the sun, take in some history and learn about a new culture? Aside from sources of the rich and famous, where does a regular Joe find extraordinary vacation ideas? Beside the typical cruise or the all inclusive resort in Mexico, Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands, where else can a person in quest of new vacation ideas, discover exotic places in the world to see and experience?

It's called the Internet, which is a host of travel news, deals and destinations. From fact gathering, to booking affordable hotel rates, here are three stages of making your travel idea come to life:

Vacation Planning Site Resources

These sites offer a wealth of information to help plan your travel itinerary. From local tourist attractions as well as the culture, the following sites feature a plethora of travel ideas: 1) Tripwiser.com 2) IgoUgo.com, TripTie.com. But, do not be too hasty to book your itinerary on these sites. Prior to booking any travel plans, cost comparison is key.

Once you decide where to go on vacation, compare airfare costs. Visit an airfare search engine directory (in example: Kayak.com, SideStep.com, etcetera) with the following airline options:

        • AirTran

	• Alaska Airlines

	• American Airlines

	• Continental

	• Delta

	• Frontier

	• Multiple Airlines

	• Northwest

	• Southwest

	• United

	• US Airways

If you're interested in a specific airline, both Kayak and SideStep allow you to search by carrier only. Depending on which continent you're planning to travel to--certain airfare search engine directories present specials and discount prices on flights, cars and hotels. For example, if you are planning a trip to Europe, SkyScanner.net gathers information from airline carriers who fly to any major city in the United Kingdom. Not to mention, the site has affiliations with travel agents who have real deals on airfare tickets.

After your flight is booked, you may want to shop around for hotels. The best online resource to begin your research is at TripAdvisor.com. (Personally, when I booked my trip to New Zealand, this site was an invaluable resource). This site is an awesome treasure trove of hotel information. Written by real travelers with real vacation delights and nightmares, TripAdvisor alleviates some of the uncertainty involved in booking a hotel.

So, there you have it, three stages of booking travel for a new experience in vacationing.

Other travel news articles

■ Vacaction Crime Trends

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

10-Reasons to Fly Southwest

Tags: Southwest, airlines, United, American Airlines,

With ultra-cheap airfare becoming a rapidly extinct means of travel, airline company's should take a page from Southwest Airlines. With many commercial carriers innovating new strategies on how to water down service and boost flight revenues in the way of new baggage fees (American, United), and travel insurance for flights they overbooked or cancelled (American Airlines), they might consider a more consumer friendly approach.

For example, at American Airlines, their brand identity should read more like "fly the ''unfriendly skies." Aside from American Airline's Baggage Fee Policy: $15 surcharge (each way) with $25 surcharge second bag (each way), the airline is touting new travel insurance product--based on the possibility that they (meaning American Airlines) cancels a passenger's flight. What an ironic yet peculiar way to stimulate profitability: book a flight, cancel it and profit. It seems only apropos that American Airlines charge passengers for lost or stolen luggage.

As for Southwest's on-target commercials to its ever improving and evolving customer service, United and American Airlines could learn a thing or two from this consumer friendly carrier. They might consider nurturing a little consumer loyalty, the same way that Southwest has won over its airline patrons with:

■ Friendly consumer service

■ Roomier seats

■ No fee fuel surcharges

■ Affordable prices

■ No charges for snacks

■ A wealth of hotel, car travel packages

■ No baggage fees

■ No curbside check-in fees

■ A positive rebooking policy

■ Zero on phone reservation fees

In case you have not seen Southwest's new commercial, it talks about how its competitors "nickel and dime" the American passenger. While we all understand the importance of profitability, and the inflating cost of fuel, there's no reason to burden customers with extraneous fees or merely punish them for flying with an airline company. Keep up the great service Southwest!!

Holly Bentz (c) 2008 fruitionmedia.net

Flowers for Shaded Gardens

Tags: shade garden flowers, flowers for shade garden, shade garden plants flowers, best flowers to plant in full shade

Looking for shaded garden flowers, featuring a splash of vibrant color?
