June Gardening Checklist

Dear Consumer Journal,

I dread pruning the landscape.

I was wondering if it would be green to forgo pruning? Is it  really necessary?

_____________________________________________

Despite the arduousness of pruning, it serves multiple purposes:

Cleans up the landscape
  • Promotes growth and fullness
  • Maintains the plant's appropriate shape, size and flowering potential
  • Improves shrub and tree health, offering better air circulation and sun exposure
  • Fortifies branches

Aside from pruning the shrubs and hedges, there are several other gardening chores to add to the
to-list:

  • Examine plants, shrubs and trees for spider mite infestation.

  • Promote flowering, discard wilted blooms from roses, perennials and annuals.

  • If rainfall is sparse, water greenery and foliage generously.

  • Prepare rhododendrons, junipers, pines, azaleas, laurel and hollies to withstand sizzling temperatures
with chelated iron.

  • Spread mulch around plant beds to hinder the growth of weeds

  • Select decorative plant container for potting plant and flower arrangements. This low maintenance approach to
gardening is worth the investment.
