Airlines Shrink Seating to Maximize Capacity

Several commercial airlines plan to fatten up revenue, packing travelers in like cattle. As if air travel conditions were not deplorable enough--American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines are squeezing in 10 - 12 more seats to maximize passenger capacity. Major carriers are making  the 31-inch seat as the new standard in  coach .

Both Delta and Continental Airlines are adding 10 more seats to their 737-800 fleets. American Airlines is a little more zealous, with 12 additional coach seats slated for their new Boeing 737-800s.  Manufactured in a pliable material with a reclining bottom, American Airlines contends that its new 31-inch seat is far more comfy.

Fortunately, commercial discount carriers  plan to keep their consumers seated in comfort:

  • Frontier's A319 offers 33 inches
  • Virgin America's  A319 aircraft features 32 inches
  • Jet Blue's A320 presents accommodates 34 inches
  • Southwest Airline's 737-700 aircrafts provide 32-33 inches
