Basic Road-trip Car Maintenance Checklist
With premium-gas suspended under $3.00/per gallon, the America Automobile Association forecasts that more Americans will vacation via road trip this summer. Aside from belonging to an automobile club with roadside assistance, there are several parts and fluids to check:
Battery
During warmer temperatures, batteries are more susceptible to failure.
Fluids and hoses
Make sure the radiator is filled with 50 percent water and 50 percent coolant. Check brake fluids, as well. Make note of any hoses with cracks.
Check your oil and have an oil change every 7500 miles. For cars that endure harsh conditions (excessive dust exposure, cold starts, short trips), oil changes are recommended every 3000 miles. [Source: Consumer Reports
Tires
Check tires for wear. Maximize gas mileage with the appropriate tire inflation.
Windshield
Fill up the windshield washer reservoir.
