Booking a Discount Hotel

Tags: discount hotels, travel deals,

As the cost of crude oil totters just under $120 a barrel, it’s pretty clear that airfare and gas won’t be getting cheap anytime soon. With the nation’s glut of hotel real estate, accommodations are a plenty. Which means, there are a few money savings tips to book discounted hotel stay.

Despite the cost to drive or fly, the Consumer Journal researched a strategy for securing and reserving affordable lodging accommodations. Use the following checklist to acquire your discounted hotel stay at a four or even five star hotel:

Peruse local hotel rates.
From the five-star hotel, to the Comfort Inn, visit hotel booking sites to cost compare the variation of rates. Although, Hotels.com and Priceline, Expedia.com offer a wide range of room reservations, be sure to visit websites, such as TripAdvisor.com. The site features a comprehensive database of hotel reviews, written by real travelers. Once, you’ve narrowed your choices; proceed with booking your reservation.

Calculate the deal.
Beware of a free night’s stay. Depending on the room rate, an additional night’s stay could end up costing you more. For example, let’s say you drive to St. Louis, and there’s a special promotion for a “third night free.” Be sure to calculate and compare the regular cost of the room for two and three night’s stay. Sometimes, these offers may be pricier than a regular booking. In cases, where you’re flying, evaluate the cost of the flight if you extend your flight or stay to an additional day.

Make direct contact.
Depending on the hotel, making direct contact may offer the ultimate savings. Instead of using the 800-number, be sure to call the hotel you would like to book your reservation. Ask to confer with a hotel manager, who has the authority and motivation to fill all rooms.

Opt for the cheap-o hotel.
In cases where the luxury hotel is out of your budget, reserve a room at an affordable chain, where cancellations are accepted without any penalties. Then, two days prior to your stay, contact the upscale hotel to see if there are any deals within your means. If so, lock in the reservation and cancel your original hotel booking.

Consider time-shares.
Not all luxury hotels are looking to discount their room rates. As an affordable alternative, consider a timeshare. With a number of hotels doubling as getaway living accommodations or timeshares, depending on the city, luxury accommodations are in ample supply. For instance at SellMyTimeShareNow.com, condos and single family homes are available for weekly rates.

Take advantage of memberships.
When all else fails, the cheapest hotel stay is in your wallet. If you’re a member of Sam’s Club, AAA or any frequent miles program, be sure to take advantage of these program’s hotel discounts and travel incentives.
