Fuel Efficiency Alternatives

The growing cost of gas has many Americans looking to invest in a new or used hybrid. However, there are several ways to conserve on fuel. Aside from opting for public transportation, car pooling or hopping a bike there are four tactics to save on gas:
Add the Right Oil
Starting under the hood of the car, using the appropriate grade of motor oil makes for good fuel economy. For the best fuel efficiency, refer to the vehicles owner's manual and use the recommended grade of your car's model. Because it makes the engine work harder, motor oil, too thick in viscosity, tends to make the engine burn more fuel.
Have a Tune-up
Rather than use an additive touted to improve gas mileage, giving your vehicle a tune up is far more effective. For instance, an air filter replacement can boost mileage by ten percent. Moreover, a tuned engine with clean spark plugs and a wheel alignment present fuel efficiency.
Inflate the tires
While, improperly inflated tires expend more gas, over-inflated tires hinder the performance of the vehicle. Be sure to inflate tires to the pressure detailed in the owner's manual.
Crank the AC
While most people are shutting off the air conditioner to economize on fuel, this is ideal for local neighborhood runs. Since an open window at high speeds is harder on the engine, on the highway running the air conditioner is more fuel efficient.
