Who Is Privy to Your Consumer Credit Score?

TAGS: Credit score, credit report, credit bureau, employee credit check

Dear Consumer Journal:

Q: Aside from lending institutions and insurance companies, who else has authorization to check my credit report, my credit score and payment history?

Answer:
Depending on which state you reside, your profession and how the information is used, it is legal for your employer to conduct a credit check. Even if you are a longtime employee, your company may obtain  this information for "employment purposes."

For example in states such as California and Illinois, employers tend to monitor this information for employee evaluation purposes: promotion, retention or reassignment. Nevertheless, an employer must provide the following:

· Prior to obtaining the report, communicate written disclosure to the employee.

· Obtain written authorization from the employee to obtain the consumer credit report.

· Submit certification to the credit reporting bureau(s) agency including the employer's disclosure, and written authorization.

Consumer Tip: There are two ways to improve your credit score:

1) Pay more than the monthly minimum of all  credit card bills before the statement is due.

2) Request a copy of your credit score, and submit any corrections with the appropriate documentation to the credit bureaus (i.e. TransUnion, Experian, Equifax)
