It is a misnomer that identity theft is detectable via monitoring one’s credit report. Unless an identity thief allows an account to go into collection, detecting multiple uses of a consumer’s social security number (SSN) is a hard case to crack.
Three Ways to Protect Your Social Security Number
Consumer tip: In case you lose your wallet, do not carry your social security card. Store it in a safe place. Request to have your social security number omitted from your driver’s license. When completing a W-2 form, write down the last four-digits of your social security number.
