The Deal on Analog-Digital Converter Box

Categories: digital to analog converterbox, DTV, Digital TV, February 17, 2009, analog-to-digital, consumer bargains, discount

Moveover analog. Digital television (DTV) is just around the corner. Effective February 17, 2009, analog television will become an unusable technology. Without the connection of a digital converter box, an analog TV will be inoperable.

 DTV Consumer Facts:
  • It is unnecessary for cable subscribers to buy a converter box because their TV provider already broadcasts digital television.
  • Televisions, that are DTV ready or have a digital tuner, do not need a converter box.
  • Analog digital converter boxes are necessities for consumers who do not plan to part ways with their old analog TV.

The digital television initiative is not optional. From retailers, networks to local associations, the analog-to-digital transition affects everyone. The federal government’s support focuses on easing the transition. In fact, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an agency of the Department of Commerce, developed the TV Converter Box Coupon Program, which offers American consumers $40 off the price of the converter box.

With the cost of these slender boxes starting at $59 and the government’s generous $40 discount, that’s roughly a 60 percent savings. Coupons are redeemable at one of more than 250 different “certified,” retailers. Below is a list of national retailers who are accepting the coupon:

§ Best Buy

§ Circuit City

§ Crutchfield

§ K-Mart

§ Radio Shack

§ Sears

§ Target

§ Tru-Value Hardware

§ Wal-mart

Consumer Report: While Best Buy accepts the analog-to digital converter box coupon, it comes with one restriction: the purchase must be made in-store. As usual, the Consumer Journal found the policies and practices of Circuit City to outperform that of Best Buy. Even though Circuit City requires the analog-to digital converter box to be purchased in store, they offer consumers the convenience of ordering online and using Circuit City’s 24-minute pick up service.
