Preparing for the 10-day plus vacation or holiday, goes well beyond  planning hotel accommodations, the attire and the attraction itinerary. Before you travel, here are 10 things to add to your to-do list:


  1. Check the weather reports and averages of your destination (visit  Weather.com)
  2. Pay all bills
  3. Visit the TSA web site to review the latest updates in approved and banned carry on items
  4. Put newspaper and other daily journal deliveries on hold
  5. Stop the mail
  6. Schedule or defer any house maintenance  (i.e. watering plants)
  7. To save energy set the thermostat to 68 degrees  
  8. Check credit cards for available balances--for any unforeseen emergencies
  9. Secure the house, contact the alarm company
  10. When applicable, do not forget to book any rental cars well before your departure. Note, bidding sites, (i.e. Priceline.com) offer the best car rental value and underlying savings.
