Tips to Shield Online Privacy

Categories: Consumer information privacy, Privacy Protection, Protect privacy, safeguard privacy

Protecting your consumer information and privacy is a top priority. Annually, identity theft and fraud accounts for billions of dollars in losses. Use these three tactics to maintain your right to consumer privacy:

Be persnickety in how you dole out your personal information.
Dole out information selectively. Whether you’re shopping online or at the check out counter at Macy’s, never provide your personal information (Social Security number, income or phone number) without determining how and why the information is pertinentto the purchase and how it will be used.

Exert Anonymity.
When you sign up for a store’s loyalty membership card, opt as the anonymous buyer – to avoid leaving a bread trail of your shopping habits.

Shield your privacy.
Every home office computer should have a firewall. Never respond to email queries requesting your personal information or demanding that you reset or confirm your username and passwords. Quite often, these “phishing” scams are designed to commandeer your information.
