Earsplitting, Deafening Toys

What every parent should know about noise, safety and toys

Categories: child toys, toy safety, loud toys, noisy toys

Today's boisterous, animated, earsplitting gadgets and toys for kids come with many deafening side effects. It only takes a few seconds to permanently damage a child's eardrums. According to Laura Brady, senior clinical audiologist of the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, ears are tantamount to a "natural tubing resonator." However, children's ears are incapable of handling the decibels adults hear. The disparity can be as high as 20 decibels.

Annually the US Public Interest Research Group, a non-profit organization, conducts a survey on toy safety. The information is researched to spark consumer awareness.

This year the advocate unit, US Public Interest Research Group assembled a list of six of the most earsplitting deafening toys for parents to beware of:

• Boom Blasters Sax (91-100 decibels)
• Carry Along Musical Keyboard with Teaching Lights (93-103 decibels)
• Dream Dazzlers Stylin' Guitar (95-110 decibels)
• Elite Operations Astro Blaster Set (91-105 decibels)
• Frontline Defenders Assault Machine (97-104 decibels)
• Toll Truck Cordless Impact Drill (92-98 decibels)
