Free Consumer Report: Consumer Holiday Shopping Returns

Categories: Holiday shopping, returns, refunds, consumer shopping

Subsequent to the hectic holiday shopping season, retailers expect millions of consumer goods to be returned. It's a part of the retail business model that was inspired by Chicago's Marshall Field's back in the 1880s. Here are some interesting facts on consumers and returns:

● According to a report released by the National Retail Federation (NRF), "return fraud" will account for $3.5 billion of losses this holiday season. "Return fraud" ranges from purchasing an item for a single usage, such as a cocktail dress for a special occasion to stolen goods returned with a receipt.

● The National Retail Federation predicts that 9 percent of holiday purchases will find their way back into stores.

● Several retailers staff employees solely to handle returned items.

● Based on a survey conducted by Katzenbach Partners, more than 60 percent of consumers vow to never shop in stores where they received poor customer service.
