Wine Tasting Spewing Etiquette

What transpires before a wine tasting aficionado undertakes the seemingly uncivilized task of spewing out a mouthful of wine is far more intoxicating then the spitting act, itself. The fine art of wine tasting starts with fixating the eyes on the color and viscosity of the wine.  Darker hues represent heartier wines (in example a Zinfandel or Petite Syrah).  Wines such as a Pinot Noir or a Merlot are more apt be on the lighter side.

To check the viscosity of the glass at hand, swirl the wine in a brisk fashion.  Then, watch the wine’s tears rain into the cavity of the goblet.  Now, -- for the overall enhancement of the wine’s aroma, inhale the bouquet.  Do not forget to try to identify those flavors either.  But, the downside of wine tasting necessitates a little spewing action.  This is where the fine art of the wine taste becomes uncouth.  Nevertheless, here are a few basics on spitting wine with a modicum of decorum.

Those metallic drums, gargantuan bowls and spittoons are designed for the obvious.  In cases where tasters are making a day of wine sampling, wine expulsion is necessary.  Here are a few basic etiquette rules on spewing:

When the mouth is full of wine, cease the chatter.

Be observant as not to engage another person in conversation when they are tasting a wine – so that they can concentrate on the wine.

Never attempt to spew across another individual.  (Remember to use your own spit canister at sit-down tasting events).

Upon the completion of tasting a wine, with the lips pursed, spew in a single jet stream formation.

Take heed not to dribble the wine from your mouth.  (Ideal spitting means that there are not any signs of wine on your face, the floor, the countertop or any people in close proximity.
