Consumer Alert -- depending on where one resides, a few tax incentives may be in-store. Approximately 13 states are offering consumers a tax break on back-to school shopping. The tax-free offer includes everything from school supplies, clothing to computers sales. During the months of July and August both sales and uses taxes will be waived in the following states:
• Alabama August 4 - 6
• Connecticut August 20 - 26
• District of Columbia August 5-13
• Florida July 22 - 30
• Georgia August 3-6
• Iowa August 4-5
• Maryland August 23 - 27
• Missouri August 4 - 6
• New Mexico August 4 - 6
• North Carolina August 4 - 6
• South Carolina August 4 - 6
• Tennessee August 4 - 6
• Texas August 4 - 6
• Virginia August 4 - 6
From state-to-state, these tax breaks vary. For instance in the "Show Me State" (Missouri), tax-free days run from August 4 – 6, 2006. Back-to-school items, -- that qualify for the sales tax exemption, include school supplies ($50 or less). A hundred dollars worth of children's apparel falls under the tax exemption.

found Missouri to offer the best tax-incentive to purchase a computer or peripheral device. The tax exemption covers technology items up to $3500 or less) and comes with a few consumer-friendly benefits.
The most generous tax break was found in the District of Columbia. With eight-free days of tax exemptions covering up to $100 worth of clothes, supplies and other accessories, the consumer savings is ideal for the low-income family. (In New York, a year-round tax break is being offered but it may come with a few restrictions).
